Gustave Doré earned his reputation as one of the most productive French illustrators and printmakers of the 1800s. His wood engravings, known for their theatrical intensity and intricate detail, brought canonical works of literature to life, chief among them Dante's Divine Comedy (particularly the Inferno), his illustrated Bible, and editions of Don Quixote and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. this inspiration came from wanting to recreate his vision of biblical stories.
